The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday during the commission’s second quarterly consultative meeting with media executives in Abuja.

Yakubu did not disclose the names of the associations but emphasized that the surge reflects growing political interest in the country’s democratic process. He assured that the applications will be scrutinized in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act, 2022.

“The commission has so far received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general election,” Yakubu said.

The meeting also focused on enhancing transparency, addressing electoral misinformation, and strengthening collaboration with the media.

INEC’s current list includes 18 registered political parties following the deregistration of 74 others in 2020.
