Kenya bans live broadcasts of anniversary protests amid clashes

Despite the ban, major outlets like the Standard Group continued live coverage, calling the directive an “attempted news blackout.”

The Kenyan government on Wednesday ordered an immediate halt to live television and radio broadcasts of ongoing anti-government protests marking the first anniversary of the 2024 demonstrations.

The Communications Authority of Kenya issued a directive claiming that live coverage violated constitutional guidelines. “This is therefore to direct all television and radio stations to stop any live coverage of the demonstrations forthwith,” the agency said.

The protests, initially peaceful, turned violent in Nairobi as demonstrators clashed with police, who deployed tear gas and sealed off key government buildings. The demonstrations commemorate last year’s deadly unrest that saw at least 60 killed by security forces.

Despite the ban, major outlets like the Standard Group continued live coverage, calling the directive an “attempted news blackout.” They also accused authorities of threatening signal carriers to block live broadcasters.

Amnesty International condemned the media gag, warning that “silencing the press is not the solution” amid growing civil unrest. Online outrage has also trailed the government’s media restrictions.
