Man City’s 115 charges cast fresh shadow after Lyon relegation signals FFP consequences

Lyon’s relegation over financial issues has reignited scrutiny of Man City’s 115 FFP charges, as Liverpool and others watch closely.

Liverpool and the rest of the Premier League are observing developments in France after Lyon were relegated to Ligue 2 over financial concerns. The French football watchdog, DNCG, announced the demotion on Tuesday, citing Lyon’s heavy debt of over £420m and concerns about the club’s sustainability without Champions League income.

The decision, which Lyon can appeal, could trigger the sale of key players like Malick Fofana, a recent Liverpool target. Meanwhile, the situation has drawn comparisons to Manchester City’s pending case over 115 Premier League financial charges dating back to 2023.

However, football finance expert Dave Powell notes the Lyon and Man City cases are fundamentally different. “The Lyon demotion is about financial stability; City’s case is legal, involving historical breaches,” Powell said.

City, who deny wrongdoing, await a final verdict. Though many expected a resolution before the new season, Powell cautions the legal process could drag on. “It’s business as usual for City,” he added, pointing to their continued spending amid uncertainty.
