Akume, a former Benue governor, is seen by supporters as best placed to lead the party, though he has not publicly declared interest.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, is under mounting pressure to resign and take over as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje’s sudden resignation.
Party sources say leaders from the North-Central zone are renewing demands for the seat to return to their region under the APC’s 2022 zoning formula.
Despite the agitation, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, denied any change in Akume’s status.
“The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue,” Onanuga said. “Agents of mischief fabricated it.”
Ganduje, who resigned citing health reasons, held the chairmanship for 22 months after taking over from Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
