“We have made all necessary preparations to ensure that tomorrow’s NEC meeting will be a success,” said a top PDP source as rival factions prepare separate meetings in Abuja today.
Tensions are high in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as rival factions prepare for a showdown over today’s 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
Disputes over the party’s National Secretary position have split leaders into camps loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
“We have made all necessary preparations to ensure that tomorrow’s NEC meeting will be a success,” said a top PDP source from Makinde’s camp, insisting on the NEC’s authority. Conversely, acting National Chairman Umar Damagum’s faction announced an “expanded National Caucus” instead, supporting Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s reinstatement.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the NWC assures all party members that the 100th NEC meeting will proceed as scheduled,” said Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja.
But Wike’s allies countered: “The meeting tomorrow (today) is the National Caucus and not the NEC meeting.”
Meanwhile, APC spokesperson Bala Ibrahim called the PDP “a dying party,” saying the crisis proves it “cannot manage itself.”
Despite calls for unity, the split threatens to deepen rifts in the main opposition party ahead of its planned National Convention in August.
