The Federal Government has filed six criminal charges against Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan under Nigeria’s amended Cybercrimes Act. The case, brought before the Federal High Court in Abuja, is the most high-profile test of the 2024 amendment to the Cybercrimes Act.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is accused of making false and defamatory statements against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello. Between April 1 and 14, 2025, she allegedly claimed they conspired to assassinate her.

“Akpabio told Yahaya Bello… that he should make sure that killing me does not happen in Abuja,” she said in a speech in Kogi State. On Channels TV, she added: “It was part of the meeting… to eliminate me.”

Prosecutors argue the comments violate Section 24(2)(c), spreading falsehoods to provoke unrest. The charges include defamation and incitement. Officials warn such statements could erode public trust and threaten national stability.
