A Nigerian care worker, Bilikesu Olagunju, has been caught on CCTV violently abusing an 88-year-old dementia patient, John Attard, in the UK.
The assault, which occurred on December 24, 2022, was just her sixth day on the job. The footage, installed by Attard’s son, shows Olagunju dragging the elderly man, threatening to “flog” him, and ignoring his cries of pain.
Attard was found unresponsive the next day with visible injuries and later died in hospital 10 days after. Olagunju pleaded guilty to ill-treatment and was sentenced to six weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work.
Prosecutor James Benson said, “Her conduct involved rough handling, verbal aggression and disregard for his vulnerability.” Judge Charlotte Welsh condemned the agency’s decision to assign her, saying, “Your actions showed a complete failure to treat Mr Attard with dignity.”
Attard’s son said, “She left him with memories of fear and indignity at the end of his life.”
