Chuba Akpom’s time at Ajax appears to be over, as the Dutch club reportedly told the Nigerian striker via WhatsApp that he is no longer needed.
Dutch Eredivisie side Ajax have told Nigerian-eligible striker Chuba Akpom he is surplus to requirements at the club, Soccernet.ng reports. The 29-year-old joined Ajax from Middlesbrough but has struggled to settle due to managerial changes and the club’s instability.
Akpom spent the second half of last season on loan at Lille, where he played a backup role to Jonathan David but still managed three goals and one assist in 16 appearances. However, the French club opted not to make the move permanent.
According to Talk Sport, Ajax informed Akpom and six others of their exit—via WhatsApp—as the club looks to offload players to fund new signings this summer.
Akpom, valued at €7 million, remains without a confirmed next destination. Born in England to Nigerian parents, he has switched allegiance to Nigeria but is yet to be called up to the Super Eagles.
“It’s likely international football will factor into his next move,” a source close to the player said.
