Attorney-General Kayode Ajulo announced that petitions alleging possible foul play—some implicating Akeredolu’s widow—had prompted calls for a coroner’s inquest.

Plans by the Ondo State Government to probe the death of former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu have sparked controversy and condemnation.

Attorney-General Kayode Ajulo announced that petitions alleging possible foul play—some implicating Akeredolu’s widow—had prompted calls for a coroner’s inquest.

Prominent figures quickly denounced the move. “This is completely unnecessary and capable of throwing the state into avoidable turmoil,” warned former Minister of State for Transportation Prince Ademola Adegoroye, urging Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to abandon the proposal.

Former Head of Service Ajose Kudehinbu described the plan as divisive, while lawyer Sola Ajisafe called it “an assault on the memory” of the late governor.

Ajisafe cautioned that the investigation could inflame tensions in Akeredolu’s hometown of Owo, saying, “Caution is the better part of leadership.”

Akeredolu, who died of prostate cancer in December 2023, was widely respected as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Nigerian Bar Association president.
