Peter Obi quits Labour Party, backs ADC coalition to challenge Tinubu in 2027

This decision was not made lightly. It comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has officially exited the party and declared his support for a new opposition coalition that has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform ahead of the 2027 polls.

In a statement released Thursday morning via his X handle, Obi said the move followed “deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward.”

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola serving as the National Secretary,” he announced.

The development comes after the LP reportedly issued Obi a 48-hour ultimatum to clarify his political position.

“No one group can change Nigeria alone. We must build bridges, not walls—even when those bridges are uneasy,” Obi said, calling for a united effort to deliver “competent, capable, and compassionate leadership.”
