Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has been given a 48-hour ultimatum to formally resign from the party following his reported involvement with a new political coalition.
In a strongly-worded statement, Labour Party’s spokesperson Obiora Ifoh distanced the party from the coalition, accusing its members of being “power mongers” and “recycled politicians” with no genuine interest in Nigeria’s future.
Ifoh alleges that Obi has held nocturnal meetings with key party members to persuade them to defect, though he claims many resisted the move.
“Any member of the Labour Party participating in this coalition must formally resign within 48 hours,” Ifoh declared. He reaffirmed the party’s position as the true platform for youth-driven change, urging members to remain loyal.
Mr Obi is yet to respond, but his recent political overtures continue to fuel speculation ahead of 2027.
Is this the beginning of a major political realignment? Or a public split that could fracture Nigeria’s opposition base?
