Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents
Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, at the age of 28. The tragic accident, which also claimed the life of his 26-year-old brother, André, occurred on kilometre 65 of the A52 highway early Thursday morning.
Emergency services responded swiftly but both men were declared dead at the scene. Civil Guard officers believe the vehicle may have suffered a tyre blowout, but investigations are ongoing.
A spokesperson said: “At this moment in time it is impossible to say at exactly what speed the car was going. What I can confirm is that no other vehicle was involved and no-one else was hurt.”
The road, dubbed a “real danger” by locals online, has come under scrutiny, with one user stating: “The A52 is in a deplorable state.”
Tributes have poured in. Pedro Proenca of the Portuguese Football Federation described Jota as “an extraordinary person, someone with an infectious joy.”
