Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva died early Thursday in a car crash in Zamora, Spain. Authorities said the Lamborghini veered off the road after a suspected burst tyre and burst into flames.
Tributes poured in from across the football world. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wrote, “There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it!” Cristiano Ronaldo posted, “It doesn’t make sense. We were only just in the national team together.” UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin called Jota’s death “devastating.”
Jota had recently celebrated winning the Premier League and marrying his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. He scored 65 goals in 182 games for Liverpool, also securing FA Cup and League Cup victories.
Fans laid flowers at Anfield, and UEFA announced a minute’s silence at the Women’s Euros.
“He was, without a doubt, one of the great figures of our national team,” said Lisbon resident Francisco Ferreira.
