The funeral for Liverpool star Diogo Jota will begin at 3 p.m. Friday in São Cosme, Portugal, just days after he and his brother André died in a car crash near Zamora, Spain.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota’s funeral will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday in São Cosme, Portugal, following his tragic death in a fiery car crash alongside his brother André. The 28-year-old, who recently married his longtime partner Rute, was returning to the UK for pre-season training when the Lamborghini Huracán he was travelling in veered off the A-52 highway in Spain and burst into flames.

The wake will take place at the São Cosme Chapel, followed by a funeral mass at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar on Saturday morning, according to local priest Jose Manuel Macedo.

Jota was advised against flying due to recent lung surgery and was driving to Santander to catch a ferry to Britain.

The Portuguese Football Federation, Liverpool FC, and tributes from the football world, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Jamie Carragher, and Gary Neville, mourned his death.

Jota is survived by his wife and three children. Spanish authorities say investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
