Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory are set to end their three-month strike following the intervention of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. According to Chidi Amadi, the minister’s chief of staff, the resolution came after a meeting with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), area council chairmen, and other stakeholders. The strike began in March over unpaid minimum wage arrears, salary increases, and a 40% peculiar allowance.

To resolve the crisis, six months of the area councils’ 10% Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) will be used to pay 70% of the owed wages. “Although it will not cover 100 per cent of the debt… it will cover about 70 per cent,” said Amadi. A committee has also been formed to address remaining issues within two weeks.

Area council chairmen, NANS, and NUT leadership acknowledged the effort. “Please NUT, we are calling on you to respect the fact that the minister has taken his time to resolve this matter,” said Abubakar Abdullahi.
