Congress has passed President Donald Trump’s sweeping agenda bill, dubbed his “big, beautiful bill,” following back-to-back overnight sessions in both chambers. The legislation, covering tax cuts, border security, defense spending, and welfare reforms, passed the House by a narrow 218–214 vote on Thursday.
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., praised Trump’s role, saying, “The President is very engaged… He helped answer questions and articulate his vision.” Despite internal GOP tension, Johnson and Trump worked overnight to sway skeptics.
Democrats opposed the bill, with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., criticizing the early morning debate: “If Republicans were so proud of this one big, ugly bill, why did debate begin at 3:28 a.m.?”
The bill extends Trump-era tax cuts, adds deductions for overtime and tipped wages, slashes green energy credits, and raises the debt ceiling by $5 trillion.
