“Jota will always be present at every breakfast, lunch, dinner, national team gathering…” — Bernardo Silva

Officials were forced to shut the graveyard where Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva were buried, shortly after their funeral on Saturday, due to inappropriate behaviour by members of the public.

The funeral, held at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar near Porto, followed a private wake on Friday. It was attended by Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, Liverpool teammates including Virgil van Dijk, and Portugal stars like Ruben Neves and Bernardo Silva.

Though the service, led by Bishop Dom Manuel Linda, passed respectfully, problems arose when the graveyard was opened. Officials closed it after visitors began taking selfies at the gravesite.

“The ones who suffer a lot are your mother and your grandparents,” the bishop said, visibly emotional.

Bernardo Silva added, “Jota will always be in our hearts… at every breakfast, lunch, dinner, national team gathering.”

Jota and Andre died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday. Hundreds of fans gathered outside the church to pay their respects.
