Data gap widens as NBS withholds GDP, VAT, labour reports

The absence of timely data is raising concerns among economists and investors

Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has yet to publish ten crucial economic reports—covering GDP, VAT, labour statistics and more—on its official website, raising concerns among analysts and stakeholders. The missing datasets, typically updated quarterly, remain unavailable as of July 7, 2025, sparking criticism over the Bureau’s commitment to transparency and timely data dissemination.

One expert noted that “once regarded as a respected data body,” the NBS now appears to lag in delivering foundational economic data. The absence of recent GDP breakdowns, VAT revenue figures, and labour-market reports hampers effective economic planning, policy formulation, and accurate forecasting.

Local businesses and foreign investors depend heavily on these official statistics to assess market conditions and make informed decisions. Without them, key stakeholders are left in the dark.

The NBS has not provided a public explanation for the delay. Calls for clarity and accountability are intensifying as stakeholders urge the Bureau to resume regular publication and restore public trust in its operations.
