“The most important infrastructure in health is the nurses because they are the closest to the patients,” Obi said.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has warned that the world may face a shortage of nurses by 2030 due to rising demand. He urged countries, including Nigeria, to invest heavily in health and education to achieve lasting national wealth.
Obi made this statement on July 7 at St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences in Benin, where he donated ₦15 million towards a building project.
“Like I always say, school is the most important investment you can give to humanity: number one, education; number two, health,” he said. “The most important infrastructure in health is the nurses because they are the closest to the patients.”
He emphasized that true development must focus on health, education, and poverty reduction. Obi revealed that he visits over 50 nursing schools and hospitals annually to support them.
Provost of the School, Father Jerome Idebe, thanked Obi for his continued generosity, noting he had also donated to the institution the previous year.
