Celibacy creates cascade of changes that can benefit mind, body

By removing the physical act of sex… you’re creating space for other important lessons.

A growing body of research suggests that choosing celibacy may lead to a series of positive mental and physical changes. Experts say abstaining from sex can open up space for personal growth, emotional healing, and the cultivation of more meaningful relationships.

“By removing the physical act of sex from your life, you’re creating space for other important, and possibly more emotional, lessons,” said relationship expert Mangala Holland.

Some individuals report that celibacy aids in recovering from trauma or emotional strain. Author Sofie Hagen, who remained celibate for nine years, described it as empowering: “It was a very strong signal from my body…”

Psychologist Dr. Limor Gottlieb noted that people who delay sexual activity often form deeper emotional bonds and make more thoughtful choices. However, therapist Stephanie Manes emphasized that mindset matters. “Intention is critical in discerning when the choice of celibacy is or isn’t constructive.”

If approached consciously, celibacy can serve as a powerful tool for self-discovery and empowerment.
