Nigerians backlash trails FG’s plan to raise electricity tariff

If you increase across boards, what assurance will there be of cost‑reflective service? In the last 10 years, we’ve only added 400 megawatts

The Federal Government, through Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, has confirmed plans to introduce a cost-reflective electricity tariff across all consumption bands, aiming to clear an estimated ₦4 trillion subsidy debt and ensure sector sustainability . Adelabu emphasised the reforms will improve power generation, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and expand renewable energy initiatives .

However, the announcement sparked public outcry. Kunle Olubiyo of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network warned, “If you increase across boards, what assurance will there be of cost‑reflective service?” noting that generation capacity has only increased marginally in the past decade . Additionally, critics on online forums accused the government of “milking Nigerians dry” and continuing “load‑shedding despite tariff hikes.” One user commented, “Gang of thieves that upgraded my Estate from band C to band B while still load‑shading us.”

As the government moves forward, it has pledged targeted subsidies for vulnerable citizens, but consumers remain sceptical, demanding improved service before any tariff adjustments.
