Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has been sentenced to one year in prison and fined €386,361 for tax fraud during his time at Real Madrid.

Brazil national team manager Carlo Ancelotti has been sentenced to one year in prison for tax fraud committed during his first stint as Real Madrid coach in 2014. Spanish authorities accused the 66-year-old of concealing income related to his image rights, defrauding the public treasury. At trial, Ancelotti said, “It was not my intention to defraud the treasury,” adding that he followed the club’s instructions, according to EFE. The court has also fined him €386,361, although he was acquitted of tax offences for 2015.

Despite the sentence, Ancelotti is not expected to serve jail time, as Spanish law typically suspends non-violent sentences under two years. Prosecutors initially sought a prison term of four years and nine months.

Ancelotti, who succeeded Real Madrid with multiple trophies, is now focused on leading Brazil to the 2026 World Cup. Brazil resume qualifiers in September against Chile and Bolivia.

He joins the list of football stars like Messi and Ronaldo who have faced similar charges.
