Vehicular and pedestrian movements were grounded at the Berger axis of Lagos on Saturday morning as security operatives blocked access routes into the state for the local government elections.
Our correspondent observed that at 7:32am, long queues of vehicles had formed, with stranded passengers forced to trek considerable distances.
A combined team of police, Federal Road Safety Corps officers, and military personnel were seen enforcing the restriction.
Some commuters, unaware of the restriction, expressed frustration. “We are unaware that there was an election in the state. We are just coming from Port Harcourt. We are here for something. We are going to Ikeja,” one passenger told a senior police officer. He was denied access.
The Lagos State Police Command had earlier announced a movement restriction from 6am to 3pm to ensure a peaceful election across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
Berger road, usually busy, remained deserted amid tight security.
