President Buhari was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman. His legacy of service and sacrifice endures.” — President Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a UK hospital on Sunday.
In a personally signed tribute, Tinubu announced full state honours for the late leader and declared a seven-day national mourning period, directing flags to fly at half-staff. Describing Buhari’s death as a profound loss, Tinubu praised him as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman” who served Nigeria with “unwavering dedication.”
Buhari led Nigeria first as a military ruler (1984-1985) and later as a democratically elected president (2015-2023). Tinubu highlighted his “quiet strength” and anti-corruption efforts, stating, “He championed discipline in public service… and placed the country above personal interest.”
The President extended condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha, his family, and the Daura Emirate, assuring a funeral befitting his legacy. “May Allah grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” Tinubu prayed, urging Nigerians to uphold Buhari’s values of service and sacrifice.
The emergency FEC session will formalise state funeral arrangements as Nigeria mourns its former leader.
