At first he threw himself against the casings, then he went around and either threw himself or was sucked into the propeller of the left engine.
A 35-year-old Italian man, identified as Andrea Russo, died Tuesday morning after running onto the runway at Milan Bergamo Airport and being sucked into the engine of a Volotea Airbus A319 bound for Asturias, Spain.
Russo reportedly abandoned his car near the terminal, forced his way through a security door and “ran into one of the two turbofans” as the aircraft was taxiing for takeoff. Witnesses described a terrifying scene. “At first he threw himself against the casings … then he went around and either threw himself or was sucked into the propeller of the left engine,” one said.
All 154 passengers and six crew aboard were unharmed. Volotea confirmed they are “providing psychological support to both passengers and crew members.” Airport operations were suspended for nearly two hours, prompting numerous cancellations and diversions.
