On July 10, gunmen attacked the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi, Edo State, Nigeria, killing a security officer and kidnapping three seminarians, according to Fides News Agency. The Diocese of Auchi reported the assault occurred just after 9:00 PM, and no contact with the abductors has yet been made. Bishop Gabriel Dunia mourned the death of officer Christopher Aweneghieme and urged all parishes to celebrate the Mass of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus to “pray for God to enlighten the hearts and minds of the kidnappers.”
Police described the attack as “not only barbaric, but also a direct attack on public peace and security” and a “senseless act of violence against a religious institution and innocent young students.” Remaining seminarians were relocated for safety. This marks the seminary’s second attack within a year; in October 2024, its rector was abducted and later released. Kidnappings targeting clergy remain a growing concern in Nigeria.
