He did his best within his capacity

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi recalled President Muhammadu Buhari’s impassioned counsel during a condolence visit in Daura on July 16, 2025, following Buhari’s burial. Obi recounted a wartime encounter during his 2023 campaign when Buhari said, “Please care for poor Nigerians,” words Obi said he carries with him. He described Buhari as a man “whose sincere appeal for fighting and caring for the poor…lived a life of simplicity” .

Obi also expressed admiration for Buhari’s dedication, stating, “I believe he did his best within his capacity” . He urged today’s leaders to emulate Buhari’s service ethos, warning that “one day we will all be called back by our creator” . Obi explained his absence from the burial, attributing it to flight restrictions and airport closures in Katsina amid dignitaries’ arrivals .

Endorsing a spirit of selflessness, Obi connected Buhari’s final message to a broader civic responsibility, encouraging Nigerian officials to champion the welfare of the disadvantaged.
