Vice President Shettima says green hydrogen will unlock new economic opportunities and position Nigeria as a global energy player.

The Federal Government has unveiled a plan to produce over four million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2060, as part of its green hydrogen strategy to reduce fossil fuel reliance and boost local fertiliser production.

The target was announced during the Nigeria4H2 Stakeholders’ Workshop in Abuja, where Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Special Adviser Tope Fasua, described the initiative as a “strategic and decisive response” to climate imperatives.

“This project is designed to unlock Nigeria’s vast and untapped potential in green hydrogen,” he said, citing solar and wind resources as key assets.

WASCAL Executive Director, Prof. Emmanuel Ramde, said the ammonia target was feasible under three forward-looking scenarios.

“Green ammonia could meet local fertiliser demand, reduce imports, and create thousands of green jobs,” he said.

A draft National Hydrogen Policy aims to attract $5bn in investment and generate $10bn in annual hydrogen exports by 2035.

Pilot projects, including a 50MW green hydrogen plant, are expected to begin by 2026.
