“We plead with Atiku to please step aside for Obi… His greatest gift to Nigeria will be to support Obi get the ADC presidential ticket in 2027.”
Supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, have appealed to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to drop his 2027 ambition and back Obi for the presidency.
The appeal was made during a series of rallies across Abia State on Friday to mark Obi’s 64th birthday, including a “one million man march” in Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia, and Uzuakoli.
Speaking in Umuahia, Dr Chibuzor Obiesili, chairman of the event’s organising committee, praised Atiku’s political contributions but urged him to support Obi’s candidacy under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“Atiku has tried his best… but his greatest sacrifice and gift to Nigeria will be to support Obi,” he said.
Obiesili described Obi as “a man of character, integrity and compassion,” adding that his leadership and advocacy for the poor transcend political and ethnic divides.
He commended opposition coalition efforts but urged that the South be considered for the 2027 ticket.
