Despite opposition, Sowore insisted, “There’s no going back on the protest.”
Tension is mounting in the Federal Capital Territory as retired police officers and activists led by Omoyele Sowore plan mass protests on Monday over poor welfare and pension injustice.
The Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers, led by Mannir M. Lawal, vowed to picket the National Assembly and Police Headquarters, demanding their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme. “We just want to be removed… and our savings refunded,” Lawal told Daily Post.
Sowore, the 2023 AAC presidential candidate, said the government and police authorities “humiliated officers in service and in retirement.”
The Nigeria Police Force, however, warned that “certain actors are weaponizing the legitimate grievances… for ulterior motives,” in a statement by FPRO Muyiwa Adejobi.
A leaked memo also revealed orders for officers in Abuja to remain confined to their barracks.
Despite opposition, Sowore insisted, “There’s no going back on the protest.”
The Police Community Relations Committee has urged dialogue to avoid further escalation.
