Scientists from Cornell University have predicted a cataclysmic end to the universe known as the “Big Crunch,” where the cosmos collapses in reverse of the Big Bang.
The theory suggests that space will eventually fold in on itself, creating an intense furnace hotter than the surface of the sun.
Professor Avi Loeb explained that the universe would reach “Planck temperature” — the highest temperature possible — turning space into a “furnace of this cosmic hell.” He added, “Needless to say, all humans will burn up in the furnace of this cosmic hell.”
Cosmologist Professor Henry Tye estimated the event would begin 19.5 billion years from now, giving the universe a total lifespan of 33.3 billion years. However, he warned that Earth faces a more immediate threat when the sun becomes a red giant in about five billion years.
“To survive, human beings have to move to the edge of our solar system or beyond,” he advised.
