Awujale’s Burial: Ogun govt unfazed by legal threats from traditionalists

“Their position is steeped in ignorance of what the law is on the matter,” said Ogun Attorney General Sina Ogungbade.

The Ogun State Government on Monday dismissed threats of legal action by the International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR) over the Islamic burial of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

Attorney General Sina Ogungbade (SAN) said the monarch’s burial followed his religious wishes and the law. He described ICIR’s legal threats as “steeped in ignorance.”

Oba Adetona was buried on July 14 according to Islamic rites, sparking outrage from traditionalists who accused the state and family of violating cultural obligations.

ICIR President Dr Fayemi Fakayode argued that Ogun State law mandates traditional rites for monarchs. Chief Rasaki Osimodi said the Osugbo society was prevented by force from performing the rites.

Ogungbade said, “If and when they sue, we will meet them in court.”
