The House of Representatives has condemned the United States’ recent decision to reduce visa validity for Nigerians from five years multiple entry to three months single entry, calling it harmful to bilateral ties and unfair to Nigerians.

Raising a motion of urgent public importance on Tuesday, Hon. Muhammad Muktar and four co-sponsors urged the U.S. to rescind the policy announced on July 8, 2025. “This House must rise in defense of the ordinary Nigerian whose aspiration to study, work, or reunite with family in the U.S. now stands threatened by a unilateral policy shift,” Muktar said.

Lawmakers expressed concern that the new policy could damage Nigeria’s diaspora engagement and its $1 billion monthly remittance goal. “This new policy will inflict significant consequences across multiple spheres,” Muktar warned.

They praised Nigerians in the U.S. as one of the most educated immigrant groups, citing contributions from figures like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Bennet Omalu.

The House unanimously resolved to formally engage the U.S. Congress, State Department, and Embassy, while directing Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry to initiate diplomatic efforts to reverse the decision.
