Tony Elumelu has donated N25 billion to support Lagos State’s new ‘Produce for Lagos’ programme, aimed at boosting food security and economic growth.
Tony Elumelu, chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), has donated N25 billion to support the newly launched ‘Produce for Lagos Programme’, an initiative by the Lagos Food Systems Infrastructure Company aimed at strengthening food security and driving economic development.
Speaking at the launch in Lagos on Wednesday, Elumelu said: “In a few years time, it will help us face the challenge of joblessness of our young ones. We believe that joblessness is a great problem of our young people. They shouldn’t be jobless, we have arable lands.”
He pledged continued support from UBA, Transcorp Group, Heirs Holdings, and the Tony Elumelu Foundation.
Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, launched the programme and a N500 billion offtake guarantee fund. She said it would address inefficiencies in Lagos’ food supply chain and align with the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Olusanya said: “The Produce for Lagos Programme is designed to strengthen ties with food-producing states, reduce food costs, create livelihoods, and ensure sustainable market access for farmers.”
