OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles 2.5 billion user prompts per day, underscoring the chatbot’s ubiquity in everyday workflows. Roughly 330 million of those daily requests come from the United States, the company told Axios. For scale, Alphabet recently said Google processes about 5 trillion searches annually, or nearly 14 billion per day, highlighting the vast—but still larger—volume of web search traffic.

The torrent of prompts carries hidden infrastructure costs. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted on X that polite add-ons such as “please” and “thank you” add up to “tens of millions” in additional expense because every extra token consumes compute and electricity. Multiplied across billions of prompts, those niceties become material.

ChatGPT usage has more than doubled in roughly eight months: in December Altman said traffic exceeded one billion daily requests; today it’s 2.5 billion. The growth reflects wide adoption across education, software development, content creation and everyday problem-solving, from quick questions to complex coding tasks. Adoption continues to accelerate.
