INEC has received 144 letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed it is now vetting 144 letters of intent submitted by associations seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. The latest submissions include 10 new applications, bringing the cumulative total to 144.

INEC’s new digital registration portal, developed in‑house by its Information and Communications Technology (ICT) department, has been fully tested and approved for deployment. According to National Commissioner Sam Olumekun, the platform enhances transparency and efficiency in the party registration process.

Olumekun said: “The Commission is evaluating all the numerous letters of intent received so far to determine the associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage. A report is expected at our next regular meeting.” The details of each submission—including proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses and interim leadership—are now accessible via the commission’s website.

While the surge in applications reflects heightened political mobilization ahead of 2027, it also poses logistical challenges. Analysts caution that managing the sheer volume of aspiring parties will require careful oversight to ensure compliance with legal requirements and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s multi-party system.
