Unknown interstellar object may pose ‘possibly hostile’ alien threat

A new study claims an interstellar object, 3I/ATLAS, may be an alien spacecraft. Researchers warn of a potential threat, but critics say it’s likely just a comet.

A controversial new study has raised alarm over a mysterious interstellar object, 3I/ATLAS, claiming it could be a “hostile” alien spacecraft potentially heading toward Earth.

“The consequences, should the hypothesis turn out to be correct, could potentially be dire for humanity,” the researchers wrote in the paper published July 16 on arXiv.

Discovered on July 1, the object is traveling toward the sun at over 130,000 mph. While astronomers initially classified it as a large comet, Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb and collaborators Adam Hibberd and Adam Crowl suggest it may be an alien probe.

Loeb argued its speed, trajectory, and potential to pass near Jupiter, Mars, and Venus could enable extraterrestrials to deploy spy gadgets unnoticed. “This could be intentional to avoid detailed observations,” he said.

However, critics, including astronomers Samantha Lawler and Chris Lintott, reject the theory. “Any suggestion that it’s artificial is nonsense on stilts,” Lintott said.

Loeb admits the theory is speculative: “By far, the most likely outcome will be that 3I/ATLAS is a completely natural interstellar object, probably a comet.”

The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, is described by its authors as a “testable hypothesis” and “fun to pursue.”
