VIA ARSENAL INSIDER:

Arsenal player ratings vs Newcastle United

David Raya – 5.5

Raya was unlucky during Anthony Elanga’s goal, but had to do better when Jacob Murphy lined up his shot, was far too easily beaten.

Myles Lewis-Skelly – 5

A rare poor performance from Lewis-Skelly, who was sloppy in his approach at left-back.

Riccardo Calafiori – 7

Starting at centre-back, Calafiori was often seen charging into the final third, showcasing his versatility to Arteta.

The Italian will be so important to Arsenal over the 2025/26 season; he just needs to stay fit.

William Saliba – 6

Saliba was caught on his heels when Elanga scored the opener, but as the game progressed, the Frenchman showed his class.

Ben White – 5

White was one of the top performers against AC Milan, but his standards slipped slightly against the Magpies.

The Englishman found himself in some encouraging positions, but his decision-making wasn’t up to scratch.

Mikel Merino – 7.5

Gyokeres would’ve applauded Merino’s finish against Newcastle, as the midfielder-turned-striker found the net with a tidy first-time shot.

Martin Zubimendi – 8.5

It’s already so clear what Zubimendi will offer to Arteta’s midfield.

Just as he did against AC Milan, the Spaniard was a calm and combative figure in the engine room, showcasing an immense array of passing types.

Ethan Nwaneri – 5.5

Nwaneri had an inspired performance against AC Milan, but the teenager looked less fluid against Newcastle.

The academy graduate exchanged some tidy play with Zubimendi, but it’s clear that to truly thrive, he needs to be further forward.

Bukayo Saka – 8

Saka looked energised and hungry, taunting Newcastle from the wide areas and with his superb footwork in the box.

Kai Havertz – 7

With Gyokeres watching on, all eyes were on Havertz, and the German showcased just what he can do along the front line.

Havertz got himself into a great position to hold the ball up before playing it into Merino’s path, a passage of play that would’ve excited Gyokeres.

Leandro Trossard – 7

Trossard looked fully-charged on the pitch against Newcastle, taking up positive positions and combining well with his teammates.

The Belgian’s attacking intelligence is a gift for Arsenal, but will he be sold this summer?

Substitutes

Martin Odegaard – 7.5

Odegaard was introduced at half-time and came on with a point to prove. The captain’s energy and desire to impact the game were immediately noticeable, and he finally scored from the spot.

Jakub Kiwior – 6.5

Replacing Calafiori, Kiwior added more stability to the back line. He’s a very valuable player in Arteta’s squad.

Max Dowman – 8

It took Dowman seconds to pull off his first trick of the game, where he was met by the arm of Joelinton.

At just 15 years old, the teenager is showing all the right signs, being confident and tactically cautious against Premier League opposition.

Kepa Arrizabalaga – 6

Kepa replaced Raya after the Spaniard conceded a poor goal. It will be interesting to see how Arteta rotates between the pair in pre-season.

Gabriel Martinelli – 6

Martinelli replaced Havertz to test himself in the centre-forward role; the Brazilian’s pace caused problems.

Declan Rice – 6

Commanding in midfield, and showed great leadership with his vocal presence.

Josh Nichols, Andre Annous, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Christian Norgaard, Marli Salmon – N/A

Introduced late in the game.
