It is time to start rebuilding trust, confidence and cooperation going forward between Thailand and Cambodia

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, set to take effect at midnight local time on 28 July 2025, to halt deadly border clashes, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced after successful mediation under ASEAN’s framework.

The breakthrough was reached during high-level talks in Putrajaya, Malaysia, hosted by Anwar and attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, alongside representatives from the United States and China.

Clashes had erupted earlier in the week after a landmine explosion wounded Thai soldiers, sparking mutual accusations of aggression. At least 35 people have been killed and nearly 300,000 have been displaced in the deadliest escalation along the border in over a decade.

Speaking to reporters, Hun Manet said, “It is time to start rebuilding trust, confidence and cooperation going forward between Thailand and Cambodia.” Phumtham echoed the sentiment, describing the truce as proof of Thailand’s commitment to peaceful resolution. Military commanders are set to meet again to coordinate details, with Malaysia helping monitor the agreement’s implementation.
