Outrage grows over US plan to eliminate contraceptives

The Trump administration’s plan to destroy nearly $10 million worth of contraceptives has drawn sharp criticism from global health groups and lawmakers.

The products, mostly IUDs and birth control implants stored in Belgium, are reportedly set for incineration in France by the end of July.

According to The Guardian, the contraceptives were originally purchased under terminated USAID contracts during President Biden’s tenure. A US State Department spokesperson confirmed the plan, stating it aligns with policies prohibiting aid to organizations that promote or perform abortions. The destruction will reportedly cost $167,000 and excludes condoms or HIV medication.

Critics argue the products—destined for sub-Saharan Africa—are not near expiry, with some valid until 2031. Offers from groups like MSI Reproductive Choices and IPPF to distribute them at no cost were rejected.

“This is the epitome of waste, fraud and abuse,” said Senator Jeanne Shaheen. The IPPF called it “an intentional act of reproductive coercion,” while Doctors Without Borders described it as a “callous waste.”

France and Belgium are under pressure to intervene. “France has a moral responsibility to act,” said French Family Planning’s Sarah Durocher. President Macron’s office declined comment.
