Tinubu Confers National Honours, $100,000, Apartments on Super Falcons
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s victorious WAFCON team with national awards, cash gifts, and housing.
The 24 Super Falcons players were each conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), given a $100,000 cash prize and a three-bedroom apartment. Technical crew members received $50,000 each.
During a reception at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Tinubu also received the 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy from team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Vice Captain Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The Nigerian Governors’ Forum reportedly added ₦360 million in support, with each of the 36 states contributing ₦10 million.
Tinubu, who admitted he struggled to watch the team’s comeback against Morocco, praised their resilience and patriotism.

Over 100 members of Katsina’s Community Watch Corps and more than 30 police officers have lost their lives in ongoing security operations, according to the state government.

US Warns Nigerians Against Birth Tourism, Threatens Visa Denials
The United States government has said it will deny visas to foreign nationals, including Nigerians, who intend to travel primarily to give birth and obtain U.S. citizenship for their children.
In a statement posted Monday via its X handle, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria warned:
“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted… Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”
The U.S. grants birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, but the practice of “birth tourism” remains controversial.
Gunmen Kill DSS Officer in Imo Ambush
A Department of State Services (DSS) officer has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen along the Okigwe–Umuna axis in Imo State.
The officer, reportedly attached to the Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), was ambushed while travelling.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but the incident adds to a growing list of targeted attacks on security personnel in the southeast.
Naira Falls to N1,540/$ at Parallel Market
The naira on Monday depreciated further, trading at N1,540 per dollar in the parallel market, down from N1,535 over the weekend.
In the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the currency closed at N1,535.5 per dollar.
The continued pressure on the naira has been attributed to speculative demand and persistent scarcity of foreign exchange.
Peter Obi Accuses Tinubu of Manipulating Economic Data
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu of distorting economic statistics to downplay Nigeria’s economic woes.

The kidnappers of six Nigerian Law School students have reportedly issued an execution threat if ransom demands are not met.
The students were abducted on July 26 in Benue State while travelling to the Yola campus in Adamawa.
Security agencies are said to be working to secure their release, though no official statement has been issued.
Gunmen Abduct Businessman in Anambra, Shoot Victim in the Leg
Unknown gunmen have abducted a businessman, Ifesinachi Onyekere, from his residence in Okpuno, Awka, Anambra State.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the incident via X, revealing that the victim was shot in the leg and taken away at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Police are yet to comment on the abduction.

John Ayuba, the 2023 deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, has resigned and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He did not state specific reasons for his departure but expressed confidence in the ADC’s ideology.
