The Royal Morocco Football Federation plans to file a formal protest after controversial VAR calls helped Nigeria win their 10th WAFCON title.
The Royal Morocco Football Federation (FRMF) is preparing an official protest to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following their 3–2 loss to Nigeria in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final.
The dramatic match, played in Rabat, ended with the Super Falcons claiming their 10th title, but was overshadowed by controversial VAR decisions.
Moroccan outrage centers on two pivotal moments: a penalty awarded to Nigeria for a handball by Nouhaila Benzina, and another initially given to Morocco but overturned after a VAR review involving Nigerian defender Tosin Demehin.
Morocco’s head coach Jorge Vilda said, “We saw there was a hand, but the referee took it off us. That’s what determined that we weren’t able to celebrate this match.”
FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa confronted the referee post-match, prompting intervention from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The controversy has sparked national uproar, with FRMF demanding a full investigation. CAF is yet to comment on the unfolding situation.
