Trump slaps 25% tariff on India ahead of trade deadline

President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on imports from India, citing “strenuous and obnoxious” trade barriers.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 25% tariff on imports from India, escalating his aggressive trade strategy just two days before a key negotiation deadline.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said India’s tariffs were “far too high” and denounced its reliance on Russian energy and military equipment. “The deadline stands strong and will not be extended,” Trump declared.

India, which exported nearly $90 billion worth of goods to the U.S. last year, has become a crucial player in global supply chains, especially after Apple shifted iPhone production from China. Apple alone shipped $17 billion worth of iPhones from India in 2024.

The new tariff marks a sharp rise from the 2.4% average previously applied to Indian imports. It follows similar elevated duties on goods from Vietnam, Japan, and the European Union.

Analysts warn the move could strain U.S.-India relations while driving up costs for American consumers. The Yale University Budget Lab recently estimated tariffs are costing U.S. households up to $2,400 annually — a figure that may climb further with the India duties.

Trump defended the move as part of his “Liberation Day” economic agenda, insisting it would “protect American jobs and industry.”
