Indian state-owned refiners have stopped buying Russian crude in the past week following U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning against countries purchasing oil from Moscow and as discounts on Russian oil narrowed, industry sources revealed.
India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has been the biggest buyer of seaborne Russian crude since Western sanctions hit Moscow’s exports. But officials said Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd have avoided fresh Russian bookings, instead sourcing supplies from Middle Eastern and West African markets.
“State refiners have shifted to spot purchases, mainly Murban crude from Abu Dhabi and West African grades,” one source told Reuters.
Private refiners Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy remain major Russian oil buyers, but state firms account for over 60% of India’s 5.2 million barrels per day refining capacity.
