The United States has imposed a 15 percent tariff on Nigeria and 10 other African countries, effective August 1, 2025.

This was contained in a White House statement issued Thursday under a new Executive Order titled “Further Modifying the Reciprocal Tariff Rates.”

“These modifications shall be effective with respect to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m.,” the statement read.

Other African nations affected include Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Mozambique, Mauritius, Ghana, Malawi, Lesotho, and Madagascar.

South Africa and Libya face even steeper tariffs of 30 percent, while Tunisia will pay 25 percent.

Non-African countries like the United Kingdom (10 percent), India (25 percent), and Japan (15 percent) were also listed.

This is the second tariff hike this year, following a similar action in April.

The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise earlier warned that such measures could hurt Nigeria’s economy by raising import costs and discouraging trade.
