Scientists reveal Shroud of Turin did not cover Jesus’ body

It is much more likely that the image is an imprint of a low-relief sculpture

Researchers using advanced 3D simulation techniques have concluded that the Shroud of Turin could not have been draped over a real human body, contradicting claims that it served as Jesus’ burial cloth.

In a new study, Brazilian digital designer Cicero Moraes virtually compared how fabric falls on a human form versus a low-relief sculpture. He found that only the low-relief model produced an image nearly identical to that on the Shroud, whereas cloth draped over an actual body showed swelling and distortion.

Moraes explained, “The image on the Shroud of Turin is more consistent with a low-relief matrix.” He added that wrapping a three-dimensional body would produce distortions, which the Shroud image does not show.

While he did not entirely rule out human contact, Moraes said it is far more plausible that the Shroud was created as a Christian artwork using a carved surface, rather than being an authentic burial cloth that covered the body of Jesus.
