“Serious efforts are being made to pull Jonathan into the race. Our northern colleagues believe it is necessary for him to complete his second term,” a PDP BOT member said.
There are strong indications that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is considering former President Goodluck Jonathan as a fallback option for its 2027 presidential ticket amid uncertainty over Peter Obi’s return to the party.
Sources told The Guardian that a high-powered lobby is persuading Jonathan with the offer of an automatic ticket, given concerns about Obi’s position.
A PDP Board of Trustees member disclosed: “Serious efforts are being made to pull Jonathan into the race. Our northern colleagues believe it is necessary for him to complete his second term.”
Former Minister of Information Jerry Gana said on Arise Television that Obi would easily win if he rejoined PDP, citing the party’s northern structures.
However, some stalwarts prefer Jonathan, arguing that his constitutional limit of one term ensures stability. Talks in The Gambia reportedly centered on Jonathan’s possible candidacy, party funding, and 2027 strategy.
