The family of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has criticised the British government for its silence on the circumstances surrounding his extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in 2021.

In a statement issued by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, and signed by Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the family said: “This case raises serious legal and humanitarian questions. The silence of the British government so far has been disappointing.”

They accused the UK of failing to clarify its official position despite Kanu being a British citizen, noting that consular visits had not resulted in concrete diplomatic action.

The family also urged the UK Parliament to investigate the role of British diplomatic missions, warning that further silence could be seen as tacit approval of Kanu’s detention.

“This is a moment for transparency, justice, and adherence to due process,” the family stressed, calling on the international community to monitor the case closely.
