“It is unfair to generalise and attribute that crime to all Nigerians.”
Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on Ghanaian authorities to avoid generalising the actions of a few Nigerians involved in crime. She made this known on Arise News while responding to a protest in Ghana calling for the deportation of Nigerians.
“If a few Nigerians have committed crimes on foreign soil, they should be punished and publicly held accountable. However, it is unfair to generalise and attribute that crime to all Nigerians in the region,” Dabiri-Erewa said.
She recounted her visit to Indonesia where 21 Nigerians were on death row, 20 of whom were from one southeastern state. “That doesn’t mean everyone from that state is a criminal,” she said.
The Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Demola, clarified that the protest targeted “tertiary traders” and not all Nigerians. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, urged calm, adding that there is “no cause for alarm” over the incident.
