Tinubu Rewards D’Tigress With $100,000 Each, National Honours
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a cash reward of $100,000 for each member of the victorious national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress.
The president made the announcement at a reception held on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to celebrate the team’s triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
Tinubu, represented by VicePresident Kashim Shettima, also conferred national honours on the players. Members of the coaching crew were each awarded $50,000.
Tinubu hailed the athletes for their resilience and called them role models for Nigerian youth.
Falana Slams Early 2027 Campaigns, Cautions Politicians
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has criticised the premature political campaigns for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Falana urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enforce the Electoral Act, 2022, and discourage early politicking.
“INEC must call political parties to order,” he said, warning that the law must be respected to maintain democratic order and electoral integrity in Nigeria.
WAEC Releases 2025 WASSCE Results
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the council on Monday. Details of the performance statistics, number of candidates, and modalities for checking results were not immediately provided in the announcement.
Retired Soldiers Protest at Finance Ministry Over Unpaid Entitlements
Scores of retired Nigerian soldiers blocked the main entrance to the Ministry of Finance headquarters in Abuja on Monday, demanding payment of outstanding entitlements.
The protest, which began around 10:15 a.m., drew heavy security presence, including military and DSS operatives.
The protesters insisted they would not vacate the premises until their gratuities and Security Debarment Allowance were paid. Retired Corporal Umar Faruq accused the government of failing its obligations, stating, “We won’t leave until they answer us.”
26 Abducted by Bandits in Zamfara
No fewer than 26 individuals, mostly women, have reportedly been abducted by bandits in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident comes just 24 hours after 16 villages in Kaura Namoda LGA were attacked, resulting in five deaths and numerous abductions.
Residents are calling for urgent government intervention in the worsening security situation in the North-West state.
Court Jails Physically-Challenged Drug Trafficker, Six Others
A Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State, has sentenced Rita Idehen, a physically-challenged female drug trafficker, and six others to a combined 93 years in prison.
Six of the sentences were delivered by Justice Prof. Chuka Obiozor, with one passed by Justice J.B.O. Quadri.
The convictions were secured by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for various drug-related offences committed across Edo State.
Police Arrest Seven Cultists Over Lawyer’s Murder in Rivers
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of seven suspected cultists connected to the murder of lawyer Bright Owhor in Port Harcourt.
Owhor was killed on July 5, 2025, along Market Road in Rumuomasi.
The police said investigations led to the suspects, who are believed to be part of a cult group terrorising the area. The police assured the public that justice will be served.
Oyebanji Declares Intention to Run for Second Term
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on Monday declared his intention to seek a second term in office.
